Lib Dems win 33 seats in Yorkshire
The Liberal Democrats won 33 council seats across Yorkshire in this week's annual May elections.
Big thanks to everyone who gave us their support and congratulations to our councillors across the seven boroughs that were up for election. In Barnsley, Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield there were ‘all up’ elections with every seat on the council contested on new ward boundaries. Meanwhle in Leeds, Sheffield and Hull one third of councillors were up for election.
We won 8 seats in Barnsley. Congratulations to Dickie Denton, Layla Nayeri and Carl Snowden (all Darton East), Steve Bullcock, Philip Wright and Ian Guest (all Kingstone ward) and David Greenhough and Florentine Bootha-King in Penistone West ward.
In Bradford congratulations to Riaz Ahmed who was elected in Bradford Moor ward, and there is a delayed election for the Idle ward following the untimely death of veteran Lib Dem councillor Jeanette Sunderland.
Calderdale saw 2 Lib Dems elected - congratulations to Ashley Evans and Chris Wadsworth (both Warley ward).
We won 5 seats in Kirklees. Congratulations to Kath Pinnock and Andrew Pinnock (Cleckheaton ward) and Ashleigh Robinson, Anthony Smith and David Ridgway (all Lindley ward).
We won 8 seats in Hull, a loss of 2 seats leaving us as the largest party on the council with 26 seats against 10 Reform and 16 Labour. Congratulations to councillors Rhiannon Beeson (Avenue), Lucy Lennon (Beverley & Newland), Maria Coward (Boothferry), Motokin Ali (Central), Linda Chambers (Drypool), Jackie Dad (Holderness), Tracey Henry (Pickering) and Laura Juskey (University ward).
Sheffield Lib Dems won 5 seats, making us the second largest party on 22 seats. Congratulations to Simon Clement-Jones (Beauchief and Greenhill), Martin Smith (Dore & Totley), Cliff Woodcraft (Fulwood), Will Sapwell (Stannington) and Mike Levery (West Ecclesfield)
In Wakefield we are the official opposition to the Reform UK led council, with 2 seats while Labour, Conservatives and Greens have just one each. Congratulations to councillors Adele Hayes and Rachel Speak (both Knottingley and Ferrybridge ward).
Across the councils that were up for election we now have a total of 72 councillors.
